Karaoke is the increasingly popular form of entertainment which lets people sing along with the soundtrack to their favorite artists and music.

Having originated in Japan almost 20 years ago, Karaoke is now spreading around the world. Millions now enjoy Karaoke at home, clubs and restaurants with family, friends and even strangers. The word "Karaoke" is a Japanese abbreviated compound word which means "empty orchestra". "Kara" comes from "karappo" meaning empty, and "oke" is abbreviation of "okesutra" or orchestra.

Karaoke is used to describe any sing-along track which eliminates the original vocals and displays lyrics on a TV or video screen Usually, a music disc consists of vocals and accompaniment. Music discs in which only the accompaniment is recorded are called "Karaoke CD's".

ظهرت الكاراوكي للمرة الأولى في اليابان منذ 20 سنة، وهي في صدد الإنتشار اليوم في كافة أنحاء العالم. يستمتع ملايين الناس بالكاراوكي اليوم في المنازل والنوادي والملاهي والمطاعم، برفقة أفراد العائلة أو الأصدقاء أو حتى الغرباء. كلمة كاراوكي هي كلمة يابانية تختصر كلمة مركبة وتعني "الأوركسترا الخالية". "كارا" إختصار لكلمة "كارابو" "karappo"   وتعني "خالٍ"، و "أوكي" هي إختصار لـ "أوكيسترا" "okesutra" أي "الأوركسترا".

تستعمل  كلمة كاراوكي للإشارة إلى أية مقطوعة موسيقية أزيل منها صوت المغني الأصلي لكي يغني حامل الميكرفون مكانه قارئاً الكلمات على شاشة تلفزيون أو فيديو. ويتشكل عادة قرص الموسيقى من صوت المغني والموسيقى التي ترافقه. أما أقرص الموسقى التي تحتوي فقط على الموسيقى المرافقة فهي ما يعرف بـ "أقراص الكاراوكي".
